The America the Beautiful Federal Lands Pass (aka “national park pass”) programs include the Annual Pass, Senior Pass, Access Pass, Military Pass, and Gold Star Families & Veterans Pass. These passes offer some of the best bargains for travel available today, a fact that only deepened with the recent introduction of the Gold Star Families & Veterans Pass in December 2022 as well as the addition of the Annual Senior pass for those who might prefer or need to “pay their way” to the longstanding lifetime pass option instead of paying it entirely upfront. Here, we’ll go over each pass and also a comprehensive list of locations that they may be used.

What are the America the Beautiful Pass Options?

As just stated, there are a number of pass options with the America the Beautiful National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Pass series. These include the following: the Annual Pass, the Access Pass, the Lifetime and Annual Senior Passes, the Volunteer Pass, the Active Military Pass, the Gold Star & Veterans Pass, and the Every Kid Outdoors (formerly Every Kid in Parks) Pass.

As a pro tip, 80% of the funding of a pass sale when purchased at a fee site or office stays at that site. If you can, purchase it at a site that means something to you, or that doesn’t receive lots of funding and attention from other sources. For example, if I was traveling to northern Arizona, I might opt to get it at Sunset Crater Volcano rather than Grand Canyon for this reason. For southern Utah, I might opt for somewhere like Cedar Breaks over Zion. Not because I don’t love Zion and Grand Canyon, but they have major support networks relative to places like Cedar Breaks and Sunset Crater.

Alternatively, I might inquire at a BLM or Forest Service office as to what their fee programs support and purchase it there, such as the BLM office in St George, Utah. Many of those offices manage areas that have similar beauty and resources to national parks but which are even more underfunded and understaffed and could also use the money from the pass sales. Online purchases are treated as a third party and go into a general fund so they do not have the same benefit to any land management area. For this reason, as well as the delay in getting them and lost time that the pass is valid, I do not recommend purchasing a pass online.

There is some controversy regarding hanging passes in the windshield. Technically, by policy, you need to have your pass, or an annual decal. However, due to risk of theft (although in my experience parkgoers are unlikely to be the type to break windshields, even for lifetime passes) some will recommend writing your pass number on a hang tag or requesting a decal to attach to your windshield for situations where you either enter a fee area after it has closed or are in one (such as a campground) overnight and need it displayed the next morning.

You must still have your pass on you and present your pass when requested. The pass number is keyed to your type of pass but it is not proof of your specific pass. If you do not have your pass on you, you must acquire a replacement or pay the standard fee for the area. Photos, printouts, and photocopies are not acceptable substitutes, you must present the actual pass itself when requested.

*

This is the standard pass for all visitors to US public lasts. It covers all entrance fees for one year from date of purchase. At per-person entry sites (e.g. Cedar Breaks, Denali) or if entering a park or other fee area by non motorized means, the pass covers the entry fee for the passholder and 3 additional individuals 16 or older. Anyone is eligible, regardless of whether you are a US citizen or not. Two people can sign the Annual Pass, unlike any of the other passes. However, the pass cannot be used by someone other than the two individuals who signed the pass.

The National Park Service is currently alone in crediting prior entrance fee payments from national park sites (regardless of designation) toward the purchase of an Annual Pass. In order to receive this credit, bring your prior fee receipts from NPS properties to an NPS fee station and present them accordingly to receive a a discount on the purchase of an Annual Pass.

See here for frequently asked questions regarding the Annual Pass, bearing the the intro above in mind.

If you arrive on a motorcycle with an Annual Pass, the pass is good for two motorcycles if the two operators are those who signed the pass, regardless of the number of people on each motorcycle.

Pro tips:

  • If you purchase early in a month, because it is good until the end of the punched month, you essentially get an extra month of use out of the pass. Try and time a trip (or pass purchase) accordingly.

Changes Coming 2024

Starting in January 2024, you will no longer be able to put two people’s names on the Annual Pass in order to cut down on fraudulent use (i.e. individuals purchasing it for themselves, then selling it to another person in violation of the terms of the pass as nontransferable.) Only one person will be allowed to sign and use an Annual Pass, as with each other pass.

America the Beautiful Senior Passes

Senior Passes (Lifetime & Annual)

Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen 62 years or older

Lifetime

Price: $80

In addition to the benefits of the standard Annual Pass, the Lifetime Senior Pass offers a 50% discount on “expanded amenity fees” at publicly managed fee areas. Expanded amenity fees including things like camping fees and things like cave tours or any other tours that might require additional fees beyond (or instead of) the standard entrance fee. Concessionaire-operated tours and campgrounds may or may not apply depending on company policy. [Strictly personal opinion, this is a reason to keep as many areas of public lands in public hands as possible].

You must sign the pass and present it with a photo ID for entry at fee areas. At unstaffed fee areas, in order to not risk theft of a lifetime pass, write the pass number (not the SKU) on the green America the Beautiful pass hangtag and hang it on your rear view mirror. The pass is not linked to you but certain portions of the number will demonstrate its legitimacy. You must still have the pass on you to present if requested. The pass does not transfer to a spouse, other family member, or friend if the passholder is not present.

When it comes to added discounts for camping specifically, under this pass camping discounts only apply to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass holder. If the group the passholder is part of occupies multiple campsites, the other sites do not qualify for a discount (unless they, too, have passholders of their own). If utility fees are available and are charged separately, there is no discount but the discount may apply if the utility and campsite fees are combined. There is no discount for group campsites and facilities that charge a flat fee. If it charges a per person fee, the pass owner alone receives a discount.

Annual

Price: $20

Introduced relatively recently, this pass is essentially like “leasing” the Lifetime variant. If a single commitment of $80 is too much for you at the time, or if you just prefer to split the payment up or have other personal reasons why it works better for you, you can get an annual one for $20 instead.

After 4 years, you can trade in four of these passes for the Lifetime pass at no additional cost, or get the Lifetime one at any time less the price of any Annual ones presented at the time of purchase. You must present the Annual pass cards when upgrading to the Lifetime pass or the discount for them will not apply. The benefits of the Annual pass are the same as the Lifetime pass, the only difference is how long the pass is good for. The pass does not transfer to a spouse, other family member, or friend if the passholder is not present.

America the Beautiful Access Pass

Access Pass

Price: Free
Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen and have a lifetime permanent disability affecting one or more major life functions

The Access Pass is available to persons with disabilities of any age. The benefits are the same as the Senior Passes. To acquire one, you have two options: either bring a doctor’s note affirming disability status (it does *not* need to state the specific disability) or sign an oath affirming that you have a lifetime permanent disability affecting one or more major life functions. Please do not request this if this does not apply to you.

Active Duty Military Pass

Active Duty Military Pass

If you are Active Duty, a free version with the same benefits as the standard Annual Pass is available to you. Present your CAC card or other proof of current duty status in order to pick it up. As usual, you must sign the pass to validate it and present it with a photo ID for entry at fee areas. It does not transfer to a spouse, other family member, or friend if the servicemember is not present.

Gold Star Family & Veterans Pass

Lifetime Gold Star Family & Veterans Pass

If you are a member of a Gold Star family or a veteran, a new pass was recently released for you. Bring proof of status (eg, for a veteran, a driver’s license stating “veteran.”) This pass confers the same benefits as the standard Annual and Active Duty passes, but is a lifetime pass instead. It does not transfer to a spouse, other family member, or friend if the passholder is not present or deceased.

Volunteer Pass

Volunteer Pass

Price: $0
Eligibility: Must provide documentation of 250 hours of volunteer service to qualify

If you commit 250 hours of volunteer service to public lands, you qualify for a free volunteer pass. It’s valid for 12 months from date of issue. For this one the volunteer should speak to their coordinator.

America the Beautiful 4th Grade Pass (Every Kid Outdoors/Every Kid in Parks)

4th Grade Pass

Cost: $0
Valid: Eligible starting September of 4th grade year and valid through following summer.

For this one, go to the Every Kid Outdoors website and follow the instructions there to apply. Once you have your paper voucher from that, you can exchange it for the actual pass at anywhere you would have gotten one of the other passes. Digital versions are not accepted, you must bring the paper version to exchange for the pass. Teachers can help their students obtain the passes (see link above).

Where are the America the Beautiful Passes Valid?

Well, this depends slightly on the pass, and private concessionaires can opt to recognize the pass as well. So this list is about as comprehensive as you can get but it can’t account for factors like those. If you have a Senior or Access Pass, in addition to the entrance fee areas listed below, remember that the vast majority of publicly-run campgrounds and tours (eg ranger led or managed) will offer discounts on these amenities. It’s always a good idea to show your pass at a given location and ask what it is good for there to confirm. But every pass will be good for entrance fees and day use only fees at the following locations.
